KANGAROO ISLAND.... a zoo without walls!

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest Island located 16 km off the coast of South Australia. A lack of predators vermin has enabled native animals to flourish on the Island, hence Kangaroo Island is highly regarded as the premier wildlife destination in Australia and often described as a zoo without walls or nature's pleasure Island.

Access to Kangaroo Island is easily achieved via a 45 minute ferry trip departing from Cape Jervis, south of Adelaide, or a 25 minute flight from the Adelaide airport. Bookings for both flights & ferry are essential to guarantee availability.

FERRY & AIRLINE LINKS:

Self-drive touring.....

We recommend self-driving as the most affordable and convenient way to experience Kangaroo Island and it's many attractions. The majority of the Island's attractions are accessible in a conventional 2WD vehicle on sealed and unsealed roads, however if you are the type of person who likes to go off the beaten track, then a 4WD is recommended. We can arrange vehicle hire on the Island or vehicles can easily be transferred to the Island via the Sealink ferry.

Finding the Retreat is simple:
We are only 1.5 hours drive from the Sealink Ferry Terminal at Penneshaw or a 1 hour drive from the Airport at Kingscote, all roads to our establishment are sealed. Follow the signs to the Flinders Chase National Park and you will find our front entrance 700 meters before the entrance to the park. We recommend guests arrive on the Island early in the day and spend the morning and early afternoon exploring the Eastern end before arriving at the Retreat by sunset. Please take care if driving at night, an abundance of wildlife at the Western end of Kangaroo Island can be a road hazard.

After your arrival we can offer a suggested itinerary for self-drive touring depending on the length of your stay and the type of attractions and activities you would like.

HIRE CAR LINKS:

Notes on hire cars:
Hire cars must be booked in advance to gaurantee availability. Some hire car companies (ie. AVIS) do not allow vehicles on Kangaroo Island. It is worth asking your hire car company about the coverage provided on Kangaroo Island before booking with them.
